Whether it’s a t-shirt or a canvas, Phil Shafer is able to create visually stunning art that is able to grab the attention of anyone who passes by. Shafer’s art career started at a young age when he began dabbling in the art of graffiti as a young Kansas City teen. He would soon enough land himself a spot at the Kansas City Art institute where he majored in photography and digital media. He has taken the skills he has acquired from art school and the streets and created the clothing brand Sikenomics.
Four years after the brands first season, Sikenomics has become the number one independent brand in Kansas City. Shafer’s clothing has found its way into local shops such as The Bunker and Method as well as shops in St Louis, Milwaukee, and Zurich, Switzerland. The brand is not Phil’s only ongoing project; he also finds time in his busy schedule to Dj and show his artwork in exhibits around the country. His most recent exhibit in Wisconsin featured a variety of paintings, customized toys, and graphic design pieces. Recently Wheat City had the opportunity to catch up with Phil and talk about his past and his future plans for Sikenomics.
